چکیده

During the 1870s and early 1880s, the British morphologist Francis Maitland Balfour contributed in important ways to the budding field of evolutionary embryology [4], especially through his comparative embryological approach to uncovering ancestral relationships between groups. As developmental biologist and historian Brian Hall [5] has observed, the field of evolutionary embryology [4] in the nineteenth century was the historical ancestor of modernday evolutionary developmental biology [6]. Balfour?s work was notably inspired by Charles Darwin?s theory of evolution [7] and Ernst Haeckel?s account of the relationships between embryology [4] and evolution [7]. Only a decade after Balfour?s program of research began, an alpine climbing accident robbed Britain of its most promising embryologist.

The embryologic development of the face has always presented the physician and scientist with an enigmatic mosaic so very different from those satisfying blocks of mesoderm, the somites, which will, with replicating exactitude, form bone, cartilage, muscle, nerve, and blood vessels through the embryo's length. For the sake of simplifying facial development in the embryo, the concepts of develop...

Syncytial Theory

The syncytial theory of neural development [5] was proposed by Victor Hensen [6] in 1864 to explain the growth and differentiation [7] of the nervous system. This theory has since been discredited, although it held a significant following at the turn of the twentieth century. Neural development was well studied but poorly understood, so Hensen proposed a simple model of development. The syncyti...
